Mystery of Mulak Shiny-Knuckle
author unknown
The Golden Gloves were the gloves of the great boxer Mulak Shiny-Knuckle. Many years ago his fame was reknowned throughout the length and breadth of the land of Tamriel. At the end of his life he was very wealthy from the thousands of bouts he won.

On his deathbed he revealed that the secret of his prosperity was a set of magical gloves. He told the servants present at his deathbed to have the gloves destroyed. When the servents went to get them, as their master had ordered, the gloves were no where to be found.

Astonished that the gloves were not where Mulak had said they would be, the servants returned to him swiftly to report the theft. However, when they arrived at their master's chambers they found not the dieing Mulak but rather the Golden Gloves lying in his bed. At this sight, the servants stood in awe, they had not known what had happened to their master or how the gloves could have moved there. For even the trusted gaurds at his door said that no one had come or gone from the room, and they detected no disturbance from the master's chambers.

The servants decided that despite the mystery of the disappearance of Mulak, they would obey his final order and destroy the gloves. They put the gloves in the fireplace and set it ablaze. After burning the gloves for a day they looked into the hearth and to their amazement found that the gloves were in pristine condition, not even cindered by the flames. Then they tried to cut the gloves with a knife and found that no matter how sharp a blade they used, the gloves could not be cut.

The servants knew that the only way they could follow through with Mulak's order was to take the gloves to the wizard who had created them. So one of the servants put the gloves in a box and decided to seek out the wizard.

Leaving the comfort of his home and people behind, the servant traveled for many weeks from his homeland of Cyrodil to the land that was called Resdayn, where the wizard owned land. Upon reaching the wizard the servant said "I have sought you out, at the bequest of my former master, to learn the secret of how to destroy these magical gloves." The wizard simply stated "What gloves?"

The servant lifted the lid so that the wizard could see the contents of the box. And without even looking the wizard smiled and said "I see only bonemeal there." The servant looked into the box and indeed there was only bonemeal within. At this the servant fell to his knees and cried "I have failed my master, mercy on my soul!" The wizard calmed him and told him that he had done exactly what he was supposed to do, and that although his master's orders were not carried out, a higher purpose was served. He assured the servant that it was doubtful that Mulak's ghost could do any harm to him in this life or the next. Bewildered and confused, the servant was thanked and dismissed.

Theories abound about the mystery of Mulak Shiny-Knuckle's Golden Gloves. Some claim that the gloves were enchanted with a Dremora that could still act as if unbound to the gloves. Another account has it that the gloves were Daedric in origin and that the wizard hadn't really created them but rather discovered the way to summon them from oblivion. The most probable theory, however, states that the wizard had made some kind of bargain with the boxer so that his soul in death was traded for glory in life. That Mulak had renegged on his bargain and tried to have the gloves destroyed, could explain the odd circumstances surrounding his disappearance, and then the transformation of the gloves to bonemeal. A last and completely possible answer is that this is just a myth, that perhaps the gloves existed but the servant created the story to cover up his own thievery. Either way, the gloves were never seen again.

(Author's note- The wizard in this story remains unidentified. However, we do know that the servant traveled to Resdayn which is the ancient name of the island of Vvardenfell. Thus one can assume that the wizard of this story may well have been a very powerfull Telvanni.)
